Do you have a singular purpose – uniquely yours alone – that you wrap round yourself like a magical cape when you feel all bold and inspired?
It might not even quite fit any more, seeing as you’ve grown a bit over the last 50 or 60 years. But just knowing that purpose is yours alone gives it a certain warmth and flexibility that none other could match, right?
Then again, do you just as often hide within and behind that cape of purpose when you’ve managed to convince yourself that someone is going to find you out for the sham you truly believe yourself to be?
Tough stuff, isn’t it . . purpose-wrapping and all?
Mmhm, I know. Over and over again through the years I asked the universe to please, just once, let me in on the secret: Where do I fit? What was I meant to do . . to be? Does anyone out there in the great beyond have a purpose for me to pull on over my head and snuggle down into?!
Just once give me a clue, dammit!
Then again, time passes. Time always passes.
Yet the call for a comfortable yet meaningful purpose still goes out: Just once – and now would be a very good time – give me a purpose cape that fits me (like TinkerBell’s or Superman’s). I’m getting a little too tired to grow into the big ones you seem to want to pile on my narrow shoulders. And all the old ones are stretched beyond recognition.
So just once – like NOW – make my purpose simple. And make it fit.
But did it? Does it? No.
The universe isn’t responsible for answering to my foolishness. Why should it? It has far bigger issues than mine to occupy its vastness. Black holes. Global warming. Fish & Chips. And such.
And so the universe just sits there and shrugs its shoulders at me, as if I were the one with the answers.
When the time is right, the answer appears
And do you know what? I AM the one with the answers, at least some of them. (You are, too.)
I’ve been the one all along . . just didn’t realize it.
Perhaps I didn’t want to realize it.
Maybe I couldn’t let myself realize it.
Maybe I was pushing so hard against everything I didn’t want to be, that I never took the time to look around and see if my purpose might be more substantial than I’d imagined . . more layers . . more possibility . . and if each of those layers came in a different size, texture, and degree of expand-ability.
Maybe I was the one all along who was making my purpose too heavy to carry me.
Of course, I also never checked to see if a spare purpose with my name on it might have been lying there at the side of the road. I wonder for how long, poor thing. Just lying there, waiting to be noticed . . like I so often waited to be noticed when no one had the time or the inclination to pay attention to me. Ahhhh.
In any case, here I am . . finally fully aware that it’s all up to me and always has been.
(Big sigh of relief time. Equally big “what now?!” time.)
Oh joy.
But do you know what’s truly amazing about all of this?
Do you have any idea . . . . . . .
And here’s the kicker . . .
Purpose Invisibility . . you gotta listen
When your right purpose fits just right, you might not even realize you are carrying it . . until you hear it.
That’s right, I said “Hear It”. And that means you have to listen. (Just keep reading. You’ll see what I mean in a minute.)
You see: When it really fits, purpose becomes weightless . . just like breathing. It not only fits you, it IS you. Can’t get much cooler than that, right?!
Your truly right purpose – each and every one of them – is tied snugly around you so no one, including you, could have any doubt what it is or why that particular purpose is yours. (Kind of like shrink-wrap with a capital “P”)
Then again: If it’s so invisible – even to you – how do you make it real? How can you be sure it’s there, and healthy . . no holes, staples, or smudges or such . .?
I mean: It may be just fine that you feel all warm and fuzzy inside it, but the only way to really know your calling is calling is to . . hmmm . . hear it call (catching on, are we?).
We boomers did ourselves and every generation after us a real disservice with all the loud music and loud everything else we tested on us.
We didn’t do our purposes a whole lot of good either. Now they kind of have to yell to be heard along with all the rest.
Yep, we did it to ourselves. Can’t blame the Man for this one.
So here we sit, all wrapped in purpose – each one as unique as we are.
And each one is trying desperately to be heard above the chattering crowd in our heads.
Each one is trying desperately to get our attention before it’s too late to send us on our way.
You do know, of course, that purposing requires a bit of travel. Just having a purpose – let alone several – means you have somewhere to go.
Isn’t that great?! I hate feeling I have no where to go.
The thing is, though: Having some place to go kind of equates with “going”.
In other words: Once you’ve figured out your purpose, you have to get off your proverbial and start living it. And I mean, really living it (i.e., doing something about it . . world saving, health care reform, and so forth)!
So, what do you say? How about it? Are you ready to get moving?
If not now . . ?
You and your purpose can hang out with your hot toddies and their friends later.
Now get going! I’ll be looking for you.
Keep growing my friend,
Gail

Oh that cape of purpose. I am so glad you said we could get another size.
Your post has me thinking about when I feel purposeful and when I don’t. Robert Fritz says about finding your purpose – You love what you love. You can’t help it. You don’t love what you don’t love. I think coming to terms with purpose is about doing more of what you love. And if you’re like me, and you need a reminder of what that is, doing even little things you love helps you make bigger decisions that get you closer to your purpose.
And when that fails, I just tell myself, whatever I am doing that day, make it count.
E
That’s a great formula for living life to its fullest, Elissa. You do what you love. And even on those days when it seems impossible to do what you love, you commit to making whatever it is you do count. I love it!
As for the cape, sizing is so tough. It can be so hard to wrap last year’s cape around this year’s purpose. Without extra sizes, even the best purpose could get kind of chilly.
